We have asked our blogger community to answer a few blogging questions about themselves, with the aim of getting to know them and their blogs a little better. These will be published as a series of blog posts, which we hope will make interesting reading. Carry on reading if you’d like to find out more about the bloggers who are active on Bloggers Required. You can view other blogger Q&As here, and you can complete your own here.
Please tell us a bit about your blog?
A lifestyle blog (with green ethics) Manchester Flick Chick features Cruelty Free Beauty reviews, Veggie eatery reviews, lifestyle product reviews and covers local and seasonal events as well as personal essays on relevant topics.
Q1. How and why did you get into blogging?
I’ve always had a passion for writing and photography, so blogging seemed like the perfect thing to try. I had a blogged sporadically at first to hone the tone and style of my writing, then I created Manchester Flick Chick. I wanted an interesting and up-beat place for people to read product reviews, reports/essays, and to discover upcoming local events.
Q2. Where do you get your writing inspiration from?
I’m inspired by green issues and animal rights and how little changes and habits can make a big difference. I’m also inspired to write about women’s issues from my personal point of view, so my everyday life experience inspires me. I’m inspired to review products as I find adverts utterly miss-leading and I want my blog to be a resource for like minded people. My amazingly vibrant home town completely inspires my photography.
Q3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to a newbie or frustrated blogger, what would they be?
Just write anything! It doesn’t matter what you write, even if you keep your posts private, it’s a way of finding your own voice and writing style at first. Think about the reasons you are starting your blog. What issues are important to you or what do you enjoy? Remember people are reading your blog because it’s written by YOU. Don’t be afraid to scrap your first blog and start afresh if you get a more succinct idea or direction for your blog. Don’t just do it for the free stuff. Don’t just do it for page rankings/follows/likes etc. If you are stuck for inspiration keep an eye on current affairs and find a unique angle or look within yourself and your own opinion and feelings. Join blogger forums on Facebook, join in with Twitter chats and online forums as well as magazine online forums.
Q4. What has changed most about blogging culture/the blogging industry since you started?
I started my first blog ten years ago, back then it was considered a geeky hobby. Now people can make a living from sponsored posts and banners or have it as a popular extension of their business. Top bloggers like Perez Hilton and Suzy Bubble are celebrities in their own right, to take it to the extreme. Also a lot of online news sites have articles written by bloggers rather than professional journalists nowadays.
Q5. What daily tools and platforms do you use in your blogging routine, for research, promotion, sharing and other?
I use Yahoo! to research facts, I never just assume anything. My dictionary app is my bible. I blog on WordPress. I use the social media platforms Twitter, Bloglovin, Instagram and Pinterest to promote my blog and individual posts. I’m part of a lot of blogger forums such as North West Bloggers on Facebook.
Q6. Do you understand your blog analytics, and how important do you think they are? Please share some best practice.
To be honest I don’t really understand page rankings etc as I don’t own my own domain. I understand ways to better my blogs SEO and my blogs statts. I think it’s incredibly important if you intend to make money out of your blog (or get freebies and event invites) but otherwise it shouldn’t matter.
Q7. Where do you hope blogging will take you in the future?
I’m going to buy my own domain name from WordPress as I want to achieve good page rankings on Google. I’d like to do sponsored posts and have banner adds on my blog. Just to get a little commission and to gain more interesting event invites.
