We have asked our blogger community to answer a few blogging questions about themselves, with the aim of getting to know them and their blogs a little better. These will be published as a series of blog posts, which we hope will make interesting reading. Carry on reading if you’d like to find out more about the bloggers who are active on Bloggers Required. You can view other blogger Q&As here, and you can complete your own here.
Please tell us a bit about your blog?
Sassy Fashionista started in 2007, and continues to grow over the years. The site is about all things style related: reviews, tutorials, giveaways, products that I am obsessed with, and of course fashion that I hate. The posts are mostly based on opinion, rather than simple cut and dry articles (that’s just boring!) Instead, Sassy Fashionista is a style blog with some sass!
Q1. How and why did you get into blogging?
Originally, I went to college for broadcast journalism. While I was studying and interning at a large news station in Boston, I was often asked to write the scripts for our fashion segments. Once I started doing that, I knew that I enjoyed writing much more than broadcasting. So, in 2007, I started Sassy Fashionista as a hobby and over the years I’ve watched it grow.
Q2. Where do you get your writing inspiration from?
I love to walk around stores, read magazines (Cosmo is my beauty and fashion bible!), and do a lot of people-watching. Although, sometimes an idea pops into my head and I have to immediately write it down–even if it’s 3am!
I also spend loads of time looking at online stores and putting together ideas for outfits. I like to write about products that most women can afford. You don’t need to spend a million bucks to look fabulous! Everyone has the potential to be a fashionista, and it’s my job to help them see that.
Q3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to a newbie or frustrated blogger, what would they be?
Don’t give up! It’s taken me several years to get where I am. If you love writing, and the subject that you’re writing about, just keep up with it. Also, make sure to network with other bloggers.
As for writer’s block, try reading a few of your fave blogs or magazines for inspiration. That always helps me when I get stuck.
If you truly love blogging, keep going! Don’t let anything get in the way of your dream.
Q4. What has changed most about blogging culture/the blogging industry since you started?
Blogs have become much more popular recently. That means having a unique blog is quite necessary. I have to take the extra time to make my voice different than those who write for other blogs. If you just conform to what everyone else is doing, your blog will get pushed aside and not get much attention.
At the same time, it’s nice to have other bloggers to talk to. The rise in blogging is helpful in that if I have a question, there’s always someone there to listen and help.
Q5. What daily tools and platforms do you use in your blogging routine, for research, promotion, sharing and other?
Facebook and Twitter are where I really spread the word about my site. I also carry at least 20 business cards with me at all times–you never know who you might meet.
Q6. Do you understand your blog analytics, and how important do you think they are? Please share some best practice.
Yes, I do a monthly check on everything. Blogger has its own way to see what I’m looking for, but I also use a couple of other sites to get more exact numbers. It’s important to do this because every day is different for me. Some days, I’ll have a random post that attracts 1,000 unique visitors, and other days I’ll only get 200. So it’s great to be able to see the subject matter that draws people in so that I can alter my blog for my readers.
Q7. Where do you hope blogging will take you in the future?
I’ve wanted to be the editor of a magazine for a while. But really, anything that involves beauty, fashion, and writing is ideal for me.
