We have asked our blogger community to answer a few blogging questions about themselves, with the aim of getting to know them and their blogs a little better. These will be published as a series of blog posts, which we hope will make interesting reading. Carry on reading if you’d like to find out more about the bloggers who are active on Bloggers Required. You can view other blogger Q&As here, and you can complete your own here.
Please tell us a bit about your blog?
My lifestyle blog first began as a place to showcase my passion, writing. It quickly morphed into a place where I could expand upon my daily quandaries and document what I hoped to be, a life worth noting.
Q1. How and why did you get into blogging?
During my sophomore year of college I found myself with an unexpected snow-day. I had toyed with the idea of creating an anonymous blog for some time and that seemed like the perfect moment. I wanted to receive feedback on my writing, share my thoughts and opinions (safely, hence the anonymous part.)
Q2. Where do you get your writing inspiration from?
I read a LOT so the books, news sources, magazines and other blogs that I read provide a great deal of inspiration. Also the problems/questions I run into I figure others may also, so I feel my exploration of topics will prove itself useful to others.
Q3. If you could offer some words of encouragement to a newbie or frustrated blogger, what would they be?
Be yourself. This cannot be stressed enough. Sticking with what you know and your authentic voice will ensure your blog the most success possible. Imitating someone will render you limited and second best.
Do not be discouraged. Gaining followers takes a lot of time, energy, networking and editing (read through post multiple times, your blog is your online portfolio for whomever is viewing it. You never know who that may be and what opportunities will come of it.)
Have fun and the moment that fun ceases, re-evaluate if you want to continue blog. Do not explain yourself if you feel like you need a little “blog break.”
Q4. What has changed most about blogging culture/the blogging industry since you started?
Brands have realized we are truly DIGITAL influencers that can have a major effect on their business.
Many new bloggers have also begun their blogs with that as their end in sight. Get lots of free things, get paid and become famous. If that is why you go into it, you most likely will not succeed.
Q5. What daily tools and platforms do you use in your blogging routine, for research, promotion, sharing and other?
Almost everything is connected and automated. My posts are auto-sent to my Google +, I pin each image, upload them to my Facebook fan page, submit the link to StumbleUpon with relevant categories tagged and tweet out the post a few times a day.
Research is usually relevant and trustworthy websites.
Q6. Do you understand your blog analytics, and how important do you think they are? Please share some best practice.
I check my blog analytics EVERY DAY.
I want to know what is drawing my readers in, where they are from and their demographic as to shape my content to meet their needs.
Look for the keywords people searched to find your relevant post, remember that and utilize smart SEO practices going forward.
Q7. Where do you hope blogging will take you in the future?
To a relationship/contract with a brand I am proud to stand behind, a weekly column and finally, getting my book published. Each risk I take with my writing has been scary, but has been a reward. Your competition can be your best resource and also instigate (unintentionally) the greatest thoughts of doubt and insecurity. I AM a talented writer and people will indeed pay me to do so which is all I ever dreamt of.
