I have spent much of this afternoon in electronic conversation with Anthony (co-blogger) arranging our latest night out. This one involves our wives and therefore will inevitably see a fair amount of alcohol consumed. As is the case with most things when you have kids, arranging a night out is not that straightforward and I immediately fast forward the fun bit in order to plan the next day and the inevitable hangover with kids present!!
My First Hangover With Kids
I can vividly remember my first ‘hangover with children’ 11 years ago. It wasn’t pretty and since then I have tried to ensure that I never end up crying more than a 3-month-old baby with a hangover again!!! With that in mind, I try to implement as many coping strategies as I can think of.
Here are my top tips for surviving the next day: If at all possible get the kids to go to a sleepover. This has to be the most obvious, but definitely the most effective solution. The ability to wake up on your own terms and have an extra couple of hours sleep is utterly invaluable and cannot be over-estimated. If it will work, bribing a family member with a takeaway or any other treat will be money well spent. If there are two of you – take shifts. 12 hours of screaming kids can seem like a daunting prospect when you are both struggling with a fizzy head. We always try to break up the day into manageable bits, which allows the other parent to recover and re-energise for their next stint! Carb Up: Don’t even try and make up for the extra calories that you had the night before by eating less the next day. Load up with bacon sandwiches, cakes, ice cream or my favourite – Milkshakes. If, like me, you struggle to get a sleepover (4 kids is a big ask after all), then try your best to get them out of the house the next day. Go for a walk to clear your head, take them to the park and let them burn off energy so that you will get an hour of downtime when you return to recharge again. Agree that housework can be done another day. Get a takeaway to avoid extra dishes and for heaven sake, the hoover can have a day off!! Today is movie day! Give them popcorn, sweets and their choice of fizzy drink and let them feel free to choose the movie of their choice on Netflix or Sky. I know this is pretty lazy, but it is effective!
These are just a few of our tips, I’m sure that there are much
