Struggling to Stay Motivated? 5 Essential Tips For Bloggers Working From Home

Trying to stay motivated at a regular day job can be challenging, but staying motivated while working from home is a whole different story. At first, the flexibility and freedom sound very enticing. But eventually, you’ll probably end up finding yourself in a bit of a rut, suffering from a lack of motivation. This is especially true if your work from home income is reliant on keeping up a blog. However, you shouldn’t let the struggle that comes from creating your own schedule and calling the shots make you feel pessimistic about the future.

Here are five tips that all bloggers can use to stay motivated while working from home.

While the couch and the bed might seem like cozy spaces to curl up with your laptop, they may not be conducive to getting things done. By setting up an area in your home that is specifically for blogging, answering emails, and knocking out those tough projects, you’re able to focus and free yourself from distractions, such as cable TV marathons and soft blankets. Make sure that anyone who is home during your working hours knows to respect your need to get things done. If possible, try to secure a working space in a part of your home that can be closed off by a door.

Create a Set Routine
Working from home comes with a lot of freedom, and it can be far too easy to get into a wacky routine. Additionally, if you don’t set a start and end time to your working day, you might never be able to turn your work brain off and enjoy your free time. One of the downsides of working from home is that it’s often hard to distinguish when you should be working and when you should be relaxing.

Create a set schedule for yourself that you stick to throughout the work week, creating an outline for your days. Maybe you start by answering emails and making important phone calls and then move on to tackling a few writing assignments. After lunch, you might want to do some proofreading of your work from the morning and then round out the day by submitting or publishing any work that is due.

Get Dressed
It might seem silly to get dressed up when no one is going to see you, but it’s important to get dressed every day. Studies have shown that what you wear does in fact have a significant effect on your daily productivity and motivation. The saying “dress for success” is just as relevant when working from home as it is in a traditional office setting. You should make the effort to keep your motivation up by putting on an outfit that makes you feel good and that boosts your confidence.

Overcome Writer’s Block
All bloggers know the feeling of sitting down to write and staring at a blank page or finding themselves scrolling through social media sites. Everyone is different, and you’ll probably need to try out a few tricks before you figure out what works best for you. But there are still some things you can take a stab at to see whether they get those juices flowing and help you beat that writer’s block.

The first thing to try is changing up your scenery. For example, if you feel like you need to get out of the house and go write in a public space, do it. You also want to make sure that you’ve got an outline of what you want to write before sitting down to work. Having an outline will give you a place to start and help you get at least a few words on the page to get you going. Breaking up large projects into smaller steps can help make them feel manageable. Give yourself the room to take your time without feeling pressured to knock out a giant task in one sitting.

Exercise
Research has found that those who exercise during their workday are more productive than those who don’t. You could be killing two birds with one stone, using work time to get in some healthy exercise while still achieving higher levels of productivity. Working from home and sitting for a majority of the day leads to decreased movement and mobility. So it’s important to fit a little bit of exercise time in each day. Even if you add just 10 minutes of cardio into your morning routine, it can continue to benefit you all day long.

Working from home is great for bloggers, but it doesn’t come without challenges. Learning how to stay motivated and on track is the key to long-term happiness and success.
