Instagram is… Well, I would like to say it is a visual representation of our lives, but over the years from the rise of social media legends, (notice how I didn’t use the term ‘influencer) it seems as though Instagram is becoming a different place. A place which spurs jealousy and an unrealistic view of what we should believe is ‘perfect’.

FYI kids, no one is perfect. We all have different views on what perfect is so defining it is simply impossible.

I have always been a fan of Instagram but have felt down about for the past few months. Mainly because it seemed all I ever saw on there was adverts and I felt like I was only ever posting for the sake of posting. So I asked myself – shall I just give up with it completely and focus on my other channels and forget about it? Or do I take some time out and figure out what I want to get out of Instagram and hope to fall back in love with again?

I was fed up with trying to find the perfect preset. After thinking I’d found it on several occasions, I’d still have to manually adjust each photo, because of course, the lighting is always different.

I’d spent far too long trying to perfect each image and trying to get a beautiful theme. I tried the oversaturated look, the moody look, the pinkish look and nothing felt like me. So I thought I’ll start with the basics and go with black and white and then see what colour I want to go overall.

After a fair bit of playing around with different colours (I say a fair bit as if it’s nothing but it literally took me a month to decide), I created this colour splash theme. I put every image in black and white and then brought out the colour that either stood out the most or is an item that I want to highlight.

For the first time since I’ve had Instagram (going back a fair few years to my schooldays), I can honestly say that I now have a theme that I’m proud of. I’m proud of it because it doesn’t copy anything that I’ve seen before, including the over-edited bright colours that I seem to see everywhere. Now don’t get me wrong I really like this look as well as many other editing methods that are often used but it just wasn’t for me.

What do I want to get out of Instagram?

Most of the things I blog about and try to share is the imperfect reality of my life. The un-airbrushed snaps with no touch ups to show real life, without looking at it through a rose-tinted window (or rose gold…) The thought process behind my new theme was – show that life isn’t always perfect and let what matters the most shine through. Be it the caption, or making a product/object in the image stand out to show what the point of the post is or the message that I am trying to get across.

Feeling blue about Instagram? This should help:

  • Don’t share things for the sake of sharing
  • Spend time deciding on what you want your theme to represent
  • Ask yourself if your niche matches your style (e.g. if your niche is happiness, your style would typically be full of happy things and not dark and gloomy unhappy things)
  • Remember that there is no right or wrong
  • People that stand out are remembered much more than someone who gets lost amongst the sea of clones.

I just gave myself a high-five because that last point is so damn awesome (sorry not sorry). In fact, I’m so proud of myself here is a clickable tweet of it that you can share with your awesome friends!
