Peaky Blinders is a multi-award winning gangster drama set in the 1920’s following the Shelby Family. Starting on BBC 2 and then moved over to BBC one for it’s fourth series, Peaky Blinders has become a munched loved and hyped television drama here in the UK. Fronted by talented actors Cillian Murphy, Helen McCrory, Joe Cole, Tom Hardy & many others, created and written by Stephen Knight.
I was late to the Peaky Blinders party and didn’t start watching until a few months ago and now I am utterly obsessed and eagerly awaiting series five! If you haven’t seen peaky Blinders before we follow the exploits of Thomas ‘Tommy’ Shelby and his family. Loosely based on a true story of the peaky blinder gang, who had bossed the streets of Birmingham for over 20 years, Over the last four series we see the Shelby clan climb their way up in wealth and the social classes, we see family connections and fall outs, love and heartbreak, and some rather despicable acts from the gang leader himself.
The name Peaky Blinders has many come from various theories, one being the gang sewing razor blades in their flat caps to use as weapons and the blind their enemies, another being the peaks of their flat caps being pulled over their face when committing a crime (like criminals using balaclava’s these days) so victims were unable to describe them. The theories are endless but the first certainly makes better television.
In the last series we saw the Shelby gang take on the Mafia, led by a grieving son of a man killed by the Shelby’s so the series evolves around revenge and Tommy trying his best to make amends and rebuild his relationship with his family after putting their necks in the noose at the end of series 3. It’s quite possible that series four will be the last time we see Alfie Solomons, a Jewish gang leader portrayed by Tom Hardy.
Series four of The Peaky Blinders is now available on netflix so what on earth are you waiting for? Have a Peaky Blinders binge, even if you have already seen it. The violence, mild humour and history will have you hooked.
