20 Dreams was quite literally dreamt up by Psychotherapist Karen Stallard. Following an inspiring dream, she woke up one morning with an idea for a game and began to work on a prototype. Combining all her knowledge of psychology, therapeutic techniques and of course playing games she created a card game which launches its players into the depths of their imagination and challenges them to know their emotions and the emotions of their fellow players.
After some hilarious test runs with family and friends, Karen decided that the game was truly inspired and began to design and refine it so it could be competitive as well as cooperative. Whilst developing the game Karen realised that 20 Dreams was not just a great storytelling game, but it was also a simple but effective tool to help teach emotional literacy. For those who are really not used to talking about feelings, this was the perfect game to begin to learn the language which makes us human and helps us to connect!
What makes a person feel happy? – Is it being invited to a party, or is it reading a book in a quiet corner? And will their happy story send you into fits of laughter as you get to know your players more or will you be completely confounded as to what emotion they could possibly be describing?
Using colourful pop-art picture cards, one person tells a story that expresses an emotion while others have to guess! To make it even more creative the story is set in the dream world, so anything goes, the whackiest, craziest dreams are imagined and told but the most important part of the story is the feeling behind the dream!
20 Dreams is for 2+ Players, Aged 12+ and playtime is approx. 30 to 45 Mins. There are 6 Player Packs of 20 Emotions, 1 Pack of Emotion Cards for use whilst playing and 60 Picture Cards. The game is pitched at Aged 12+, but if you wanted to play with younger players you just need to remove some of the harder emotions from play.
The launch of 20 Dreams began in July 2020 with a very successful Kickstarter campaign, and we are now wanting to raise awareness of how play can normalise talking about feelings and strengthen emotional bonds, whilst building hilarious memories together and having lots of fun.
